Every name holds a sound. Sometimes that sound hides a Japanese character. This small word game starts with a first name or nickname, shows a provisional Japanese sound, and lets you correct it before any character is suggested.
Readings are checked, not invented
The result only uses readings found in the KANJIDIC2 kanji dictionary. When no verified match exists, the page says so rather than forcing a character onto a name. Many "your name in kanji" services pick characters purely for sound and meaning; here a character is offered only if that reading is genuinely recorded for it.
Why the sound comes first
English names have no single Japanese spelling. "Sarah" can be サラ or セーラ; "Ian" can be イアン or イーアン. The page proposes one sound from a dictionary of name transcriptions and asks you to confirm or change it, because the kanji search depends entirely on that sound.
What this is, and what it is not
This is a word game. It is not a legal name service, a translation, tattoo advice, or a cultural credential. Enjoy the character you find, look up its meanings, and if you plan to use it for anything permanent, ask a native speaker first.
Your name stays in the browser
The page does not save the entered name or send it to a server. Kanji readings come from KANJIDIC2 by EDRDG, used under its licence.
FAQ
Why did I get no result?
Because no kanji in the dictionary carries that reading. Try a shorter part of your name — a nickname or the first syllable — or adjust the Japanese sound if it was transcribed differently from how you say it.
Can I get a whole name written in kanji?
Not here. Assigning several kanji to spell a foreign name is a creative choice with many possible answers; this page only shows single characters whose recorded reading appears in your name.
Is the meaning shown accurate?
