Sources & licence — THE KANJI IN YOUR NAME
This page explains the reading data and privacy rules behind KuraLab’s English name word game, THE KANJI IN YOUR NAME.
KANJIDIC2
Japanese character readings in the tool are derived from KANJIDIC2, produced by the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group (EDRDG), and used under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence (CC BY-SA 4.0). KuraLab acknowledges EDRDG as the source of the derived reading index. EDRDG does not endorse this tool.
How KuraLab uses the data
KuraLab filters documented on- and kun-readings into a small lookup index, then limits optional word-game choices to a separate KuraLab editorial list of familiar, affirmative characters. The tool never invents a reading: if a sound has no documented kanji reading, it says so rather than guessing.
What the tool does not claim
It does not translate a person’s name, decide a legal Japanese name, or determine cultural identity. Japanese names are written with characters chosen by families for meaning, sound and tradition; a kanji whose reading happens to match part of your name is a word-game find, not an official rendering.
KuraLab text
The short English messages shown with each character come from a separate KuraLab editorial table. They are not KANJIDIC2 definitions or translations.
Privacy
The name and reading entered into this tool stay in the browser. KuraLab does not save them in this feature.
