On new year's eve, we stayed in a small hotel.
We ate rice cakes. We wrote cards. We relaxed.
We played a board game ── Mr. Bird did not win.
He said, "Again! Again!" ── and we laughed.
We had a good time.
For the first time, I did not miss my town.
大みそか、ぼくらは小さなホテルに泊まった。
餅を食べた。カードを書いた。ゆっくりした。
ボードゲームをして──ミスター・バードは勝てなかった。
「もう一回！ もう一回！」って言うから、みんなで笑った。
いい時間だった。
初めて、自分の街を寂しく思わなかった。
On new year's day, we went outside.
We bought fortune slips.
Mina got "good". Bird got "good".
My fortune slip said ── "bad".
Mina had a charm ── wooden, and old. Her brother's charm.
She said: "It is yours now."
One word on it ── "wish".
元日、ぼくらは外へ出た。
おみくじを買った。
ミナは「吉」。バードも「吉」。
ぼくのおみくじは──「凶」だった。
ミナが木のお守りを持ってた──古い、兄さんのお守り。
「今日から、きみのものよ」
そこに一つの言葉──「wish」。
We went up the mountain. We saw them in the snow ──
her brother, and the man in the dark.
I ran. I fell down. I got up. I fell.
The light went up ── and the snow came down.
We said his name. No one said it back.
They went. Winter came.
── I miss you. I miss you.
ぼくらは山を登った。雪の中に、ふたりを見た──
彼女の兄さんと、闇の男。
走った。転んだ。立ち上がった。また転んだ。
光は昇っていき──雪は降りてきた。
名前を呼んだ。誰も呼び返さなかった。
ふたりは行ってしまった。冬が来た。
──会いたい。会いたいよ。
We went back to the hotel.
Mina did not talk. Mr. Bird did not sing.
I wrote a card ── to my mother.
I cannot say her name now. But I wrote:
"I am OK. Take care of yourself."
── I read it again, and again, and again.
ぼくらはホテルへ戻った。
ミナは話さなかった。ミスター・バードは歌わなかった。
ぼくはカードを書いた──母さんへ。
名前はもう言えない。それでも書いた。
「ぼくは大丈夫。体に気をつけて」
──それを何度も、何度も、読み返した。
The charm is here. It says one word: "wish".
My name is here. Her name is here. His song is here.
The fortune slip said "bad" ──
but Mina read it again, and said:
"Look ── one more word: 'future'."
"Bad"… and then, "future".
お守りは、ここにある。「wish」という言葉がある。
ぼくの名前はここにある。彼女の名前も。彼の歌も。
おみくじは「凶」と言った──
でもミナはもう一度読んで、言った。
「見て──もう一つ言葉がある。『future』」
「凶」…… そのあとに、「future」。
We went up the mountain. We fell down in the snow.
The light went up ── and the snow came down.
But winter stays ── and we stay, too.
── I miss you. I miss you.
── And I wish. I wish.
ぼくらは山を登った。雪の中で転んだ。
光は昇り──雪は降りた。
